SUNDAY IV LENT: my God illuminates my darkness

“We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work.
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”   (Jn. 9:4-5)

I lie low, I need to think, to have light, I ask God to grant me enlightenment, my need all the greater in that people’s plans seemingly pit themselves against the inspirations of the Holy Spirit…

Letter to Henri Tempier, 31 August 1833, EO VIII n 459

REFLECTION

Give us faith to say with the psalmist, “Lord, you light my lamp; my God illuminates my darkness.” May your light of hope shine in the darkness for families today. Show us glimpses of your presence with us and the comfort you bring.

In the busyness of today, help us to take a moment to be still and sit with you. To slow down, breathe deeply, and release our burdens to your strong hand. You are trustworthy, good, and true, and we thank you for caring for us so deeply and beautifully. Open our eyes to see you at work today. Give us your light.

In Jesus name, Amen.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

For some reason I think of the ‘temptation of Jesus’, the great lie, the false light… and I am reminded of my own weaknesses, my past when like Eugene I looked for happiness outside of God.

In the midst of our own ‘dark night(s) of the soul it would be so easy to give up and let go of God, to stay in that darkness and give ourselves over to it.

This past week I fell prey to a scam: not a scam of being asked for money, but rather a lie that might make another feel good about themselves. It took me a while to realise what was happening and I must admit it was hard to accept that I had been tempted in a way to ignore where God has been leading me all along, to a way that looked to be easier, that might lessen my struggles. A false light if you will…

Today I join all of you in asking for the courage to discern and to continue to hope and trust only in God… To ask God to hold and to carry me especially in times of doubt and struggle… To allow God’s light to continue to shine upon me and show me the way…
