SOLEMNITY OF ST. JOSEPH

“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.”    (Mt. 1:24)

Among all the Saints which the novices are especially to honor, Saint Joseph will hold the first place, as much because of his singular privilege in being associated with the mystery of our Lord Jesus Christ as because he is the patron of recollected souls who live a hidden life… They will often pray to him… and join his name almost always with those of Jesus and Mary.

(1896 Directory for those in first OMI formation)

REFLECTION

O glorious Saint Joseph, remind all who work that they are not alone in their labor, their joy or their sufferings, because Jesus is by their side, with Mary, his Mother and ours, supporting them, wiping the sweat from their brow, and setting a value on their toil. Teach them to use their labor, as you did, as a supreme means of attaining holiness. Amen.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

When I think of all the men in the Church that have been canonized and written about and yet Joseph remains a mystery. I was brought up to believe that he was probably an old man who married a very young Mary. There was a measuring of him with some of that that speaks more about those of us who somehow glossed over him and the part that he played, than of Joseph himself.

But – “because of his being associated with the mystery of our Lord Jesus Christ as because he is the patron of recollected souls who live a hidden life…” it is like a light has been turned on.

Today I begin a new stage in my life, perhaps not unlike those young men who Eugene wrote about in their first OMI formation. I have been nervously thinking about this venture which is designed to help me and others through some new physical and mental changes and limitations. To allow this to become and be used as another way in our journey of becoming holy.

I am filled with gratitude for yet again and as always the Spirit guides and leads us.
