OUR FOUNDING VISION TODAY: ENGAGING WITH THOSE WHOSE DECISIONS IMPACT THE POOR

Action on behalf of justice, peace and the integrity of creation is an integral part of evangelization.
Responding to the call of the Spirit, some Oblates identify themselves with the poor, sharing their life and commitment to justice; others are present where decisions affecting the future of the poor are being made.

CC&RR, Rule 9a

Constitution 9 of our Rule of Life shows that being at the service of the poor necessitates a wider approach to address the roots of their situation. To this end JPIC, and several Oblates were instrumental in the foundation of faith-focused investment groups. One of these was the International Interfaith Investment Group, in whose foundation Father Séamus Finn played a prominent role:

“3iG, the International, Interfaith, Investment Group, is a not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is to contribute to a just and sustainable society, by promoting faith-consistent investments in the spirit of interfaith and international dialogue and cooperation. Our organization was launched in 2005 through the efforts of the Alliance for Religions and Conservation and is a foundation registered under Dutch law.

3iG is designed to assist the Faiths in facilitating and advancing their engagement in the area of faith-consistent investing and to provide high-level research and information to enhance its development. The great challenge is to integrate faith-based principles into the world of business, particularly via investing.” www.3iGnet.org

Séamus actively engages corporations in the financial and extractives sectors, as well as multinationals on labor and supply chain issues. He also serves on the boards of a number of organizations that are focused on domestic and global justice priorities in the public policy arena. http://omiusajpic.org/about/staff/

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Oblate Associate says:

Here today we are offered yet another example of how we can live out the Constitutions and Rules. 3iG offers a positive way of changing the way corporations work. It is not something that will change the world all at once, but it is something that can lead to changes of hearts. I look and think of how Jesus did just that, how he campaigned for changes of the heart. Pope Francis – I have thought since he became Pope that he would not so much change the laws as he would try to bring about a change of heart for all of us who make up the Church and beyond. Eugene de Mazenod bringing about a change of heart with all those he met, with the poor especially, but also with the rich who supported him and the Oblates. JPIC, Father Séamus Finn and so many others who are living examples of how each of us can change the world that we live in – one heart, one CEO, one shareholder, one teacher, one worker etc. at a time.

This is another opportunity for me to examine my own life, look at my own response to the call of the Spirit and to see what that looks like.
