THE NAMES OF MY CHILDREN ARE ENGRAVED IN MY HEART

It is quite a long time since anyone in Canada has sent me an account of the personnel. It has reached the point where I could forget their names were the memory of each of my children not engraved in my heart. I love them as they are, alas! though they be imperfect and not always grateful.

Letter to Bishop Bruno Guigues in Ottawa, 25 January 1849, EO I n 108

REFLECTION

Eugene’s southern Mediterranean emotive personality always expressed itself in terms of paternal love for each of his Oblate sons.

Today I believe that, in the communion of saints, the names of each religious and lay member of his Charismatic Family is engraved in his heart and he continually cares for us.

St Eugene, pray for us.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate Associate says:

What does it look like for each of us, as we walk together with all of the members of Eugene’s charismatic family?

It is in this walking, do we begin to recognize Eugene’s invitation to stand at the foot of our crucifixes and be challenged and invited to love more deeply? Do we find our way as together we wander through the Oblate Rule of Life breathing in each of the words as they come alive within us?

I think for a moment of the woman at the well that Jesus spoke with, pointing out how she was not one of the chosen people. All the while he spoke with her, offering her the living water. She ran to her people asking if she might I have found the one that scriptures speak about, in much the same way that Mary heard Jesus say her name as she sat outside of his empty burial place. Hearing his voice say her name, she then ran to tell the apostles that Jesus was risen.

We have all been invited to learn who we are in the eyes of God. Our response appears as we invite others to learn who they are, as together we stand together in the light Eugene sheds on us.

Most certainly Eugene is our Founder, he continues to love all of us who claim to be his sons and daughters, no matter our role of life. Walking in the footsteps of Eugene de Mazenod, as models of missionary discipleship for Oblate Associates, how do we respond?
