EUGENE DE MAZENOD: OUR FATHER’S COMMUNICATION WITH HIS MANY CHILDREN

After our Lenten and Easter journey with the daily Scripture and Saint Eugene, we will resume our chronological journey through the writings of Saint Eugene de Mazenod.

My aim in these daily reflections is to make the story and rich personality and missionary spirituality of St Eugene known.

“A father’s communication with his many children… that is one of the most agreeable occupations of my life”

Letter to all the Oblates, February 2, 1857, EO XII

I hope that you do find some daily inspiration from Eugene’s communication with you.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

    Dear Frank!

Journeying with you and Eugene has become foundational in my daily prayer, with God and all who come to this place. I begin my day with Eugene, the daily Readings from Scripture and the Spirit speaking to me through others like Nouwen, Rohr, some of the Jesuits and others.

Eugene’s charism, his spirit has taught me how to allow the Spirit to speak to me through many and it is from this that I move forward “enlarging the space of my tent”. Like the tides I move out from this space and return to it during my days.
It began with Eugene’s personal invitation to place myself at the foot of my crucifix before reading/listening to his letter to Henri Tempier, and early on this journey I began reading and reflecting with Eugene de Mazenod, Co-operator of Christ the Saviour, Communicates his Spirit (then using that as a way of journeying in formation with a dear friend as she prepared to join “our family”).

It is here in this place and my life journey that I began, little by little, to know and recognise myself as I learned to see through eyes of our crucified Saviour. Intensely personal and communal in the truest meaning of those ways of being.

Step by step, grace by grace and heart beat by heart beat I (and all of us together in this place) got to know Eugene and all of his sons and daughters and those we are sent to serve.

Here I have learned to allow myself to be open to God in and with and through others with this place as my launching point for my days and nights.

‘Use me’ was what Eugene said to God as he made his oblation – and so God has and continues to do in and with all of us who share in this charism… season by season, day by day and Word by Word. To be who God has created and called us to be – there is no greater joy in life.

    Thank you!
