PALM SUNDAY: every day is good for sharing in the humiliation of the Cross

The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying:
“Hosanna to the Son of David;
blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;
hosanna in the highest.”

Matthew 21:9

Every day is good for sharing in the humiliation of the Cross we must carry daily as we follow in the Savior’s footsteps.

REFLECTION

Enlighten our hearts, Lord, that we may follow you along the way of the cross. Put to death in us the “old man” bound by selfishness, evil and sin. Make us “new men”, men and women of holiness, transformed and enlivened by your love.

(Pope Benedict XVI)

One Response to PALM SUNDAY: every day is good for sharing in the humiliation of the Cross

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

    Many years ago I would ride the bus to work with Elizabeth May, the leader and only member of the Green Party with a seat in parliament. The bus was always crowded, noisy and even smelly by the time it picked us up at our stop. We would chat and I enjoyed those times. I had a tremendous respect for her.

    Today I find myself wanting more for you than a few people lining the dusty road into Jerusalem as you ride in on a donkey. I want a crowd who will not later renounce you and demand you crucifixion.

    I am shocked at my reaction to Eugene’s invitation to take part in the humiliation of the cross. I am far from feeling holy and any fervor I have experienced for you seems to have disappeared. I seem only able to stumble behind you in the dust.

    When did I stop loving you so brightly and keenly that I would follow you anywhere?
    I am not giving up, for I am too afraid of losing you, of turning back in tiredness and confusion and getting lost. Do not put me to the test.

    Give me the grace Lord, the strength and the courage to walk with you on the road ahead and to share in the humiliation of the cross. I cannot do this alone, but if you allow me to stay close to you then maybe…
