MONDAY I LENT: Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

“I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Mt. 25:40)

“They will have a compassionate charity for the misery of the poor and they will count themselves happy to be able to relieve, in their needs, these suffering members of J.C.”

Eugene de Mazenod’s Rule for the members of his Christian Youth Association  EO XV, n. 135

REFLECTION

Christ has no body but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which He looks

Compassion on this world,

Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good,

Yours are the hands, with which He blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,

Yours are the eyes, you are His body.

Christ has no body now but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks

compassion on this world.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

(St. Teresa of Avila)

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

Yesterday I found my heart responding with the desire for perfect communion with the Beloved, to become truly one-with… The depth of that desire was such that I dared not put it into words lest I be reminded of my imperfections and sin. I was not desiring to be God, all knowing and powerful; only to be one-with.

When I first heard God say my name I seemed to know instinctively that in order love, as God loved me, I would need to totally give myself, all that I am to God and through him I would be able to love…

My body has become more vulnerable, willing but weaker. But still there are times when my eyes are the eyes with which he looks with compassion on this world.

I sought to do in order to become… Now I begin to realise that with the becoming I am able to in new ways “do”. And like Eugene’s members of the youth congregation I count myself happy to be able to relieve in my small needs, the suffering members of Jesus Christ…
