GOD, SEND ME ANYWHERE, ONLY GO WITH ME
News of the successful Oblate missions in England and Canada inspired young Oblates to want to join them.
Eugene wrote in his diary:
Letter from Brother Cauvin. He is requesting me with great insistence to send him to the foreign missions.
Diary of Eugene de Mazenod, 13 January 1847, EO XXI
Twenty-two-year-old, Eugene Cauvin, was sent to Canada the following year
REFLECTION
“God, send me anywhere, only go with me.
Lay any burden on me, only sustain me.
And sever any tie in my heart except the tie that binds my heart to Yours.”

I begin my prayer by taking time to meet Eugene Cauvin, priest, missionary Oblate. The page of his life is short but the words written by the Provincial of Canada upon his death shows me a man inspired and led by God through Eugene de Mazenod: “when he came to America his soul bore the imprint of the Congregation, who was his family “which he loved from the depths of his being”, seeming to “live for it alone”. “He took pleasure in being of service and one of the greatest joys of his life was always the happiness he procured for others.”
“We will let our lives be enriched by the poor and the marginalized as we work with them, for they can make us hear in new ways the Gospel we proclaim.” (R 8a) This is the effect of living out the Oblate Motto of being sent to evangelize and how we are all then evangelized.
Livingstone’s short prayer leaves me breathless and I find myself drawn to the words of “The Deers Cry” by Arvo Part:
I arise today, through the strength of heaven…
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in me, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me,
Christ with me…
