WHAT GRATITUDE MUST FILL OUR HEARTS

Thursday of the Fourth Week of Advent

Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord… the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.

Lk 1:46 – 50

How consoling it is to see him rise triumphant over death and hell, and what gratitude must fill our hearts at the thought that this good Master has really willed to make us sharers in his resurrection, destroying the sin that is in us and giving us a new life.

One Response to WHAT GRATITUDE MUST FILL OUR HEARTS

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

When asked what is my favourite piece of scripture, my immediate response has always been “The Magnificat” and so as I sit here this morning my heart sings it with quiet abandon and joy and then becomes a soft chant sung in the manner of Taizé prayer filled with tender and humble gratitude.

“…willed to make us sharers in his resurrection… in his death and resurrection… giving us a new life.

I am reminded of the piece (The Divine Word of Hope) written by Henri Nouwen: “The small child of Bethlehem, the unknown young man of Nazareth, the rejected preacher, the naked man on the cross…” for I believe that God willed with that just as we meet the divine with the birth of Jesus, that we also all become sharers in his death on the cross giving rise to his resurrection – an endless flow from, to all in the same heart beat. I have a Franciscan friend who the other day mentioned how he focussed and was drawn to the birth of Jesus, as I sat there and thought of how my focus has always been the cross giving birth to the resurrection.

This brings me to moments of pondering and hoping how when I die, that people will yes, remember how much I loved but more importantly that they remember what I was like before God caught hold of me, picking me up and filling my heart with love so great that it seemed to overflow outwards. From an abyss of darkness into life in the Light.

Indeed, “God has done great things for me and holy is his Name”.
