GOD WHO SHOWS US THE ROAD AND WILL NOT ABANDON US

Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Advent

And coming to her, the angel said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”

But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.

…Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Lk 1:29-31;38

We need to have some courage and confidence in God who shows us the road and will not abandon us when we act in his name and for his glory.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

Fiat. Oblation. More than holy words they describe a lived reality as I sit and ponder with Mary and St. Eugene.

“If everyone were holy and handsome, with “alter Christus” shining in neon lighting from them, it would be easy to see Christ in everyone. If Mary had appeared in Bethlehem clothed, as Saint John says, with the sun, a crown of twelves stars on her head, and the moon under her feet, then people would have fought to make room for her. But that was not God’s way for her, nor is it Christ’s way for himself, especially now when he is disguised under every type of humanity that treads the earth.” (Quote from Dorothy Day in “Watch for the Light”)

I think for a moment of the Oblate priest dressed in Argentina’s colours and who donned a stole to hear the confession of one who felt the need for such mercy. I saw it and was so delighted – the meeting of the divine and the human. This was the image of “close to the people”, the look of humility and humanness. I thanked God for him even though I don’t know him. One of Eugene’s sons.

It is God who calls us, who leads the way, walking with us, indeed carrying us when needed. We need only have the courage and audacity to acknowledge with trust and immense hope that we are right ‘where we are supposed to be’.

It matters not our state of life, our gender, our roles, milieu or culture… (R. 37a)

Behold, we are all servants of the Lord…
