MY SOUL JOINS IN THE HAPPY EMOTIONS THAT MAKE HEAVEN REJOICE FOR SINNERS WHO ARE CONVERTED

Tuesday of the Second Week of Advent

“If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray?

And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray.”

Mt 18:12-13

“The care we owe you, by constantly occupying our thoughts with the pain caused by the loss of so many souls who have fallen from the paths of salvation, is often rewarded with the most comforting consolations.

When we see grace acting powerfully among you and spreading both light in people’ s minds and charity in their hearts, when the infinite mercy of the Lord is manifested with brilliance in the midst of our flock, and when the lost sheep that we thought was lost is brought back to the fold and restored to our love, then our rejoicing is great, we can say, like St. Paul, that we “overflow with joy” (2 Cor 7:4), for our soul joins in the happy emotions that make heaven rejoice for sinners who are converted.”

I have sat here this morning, celebrating small moments of joy, of finding and being found.

As human beings we go out to bring people in, be they family, friends, acquaintances, new people we are meeting for the first time… And it is with a shared joy that we invite them to walk with us and us with them; return to us, their family or inviting them to join us. It is not then such a huge stretch to be able to imagine the Beloved celebrating each of us, as we have learned to celebrate others.

I think of the child who runs ahead of their family and hides behind a small bush, thinking that because he or she cannot see them, they are not there. The child jumps out with excitement and they rejoice in each other together. The parents knew where they were, they were not lost but when their child jumps out before them, they cannot help but delight and be joyous in their child ‘finding them’. Small but unforgettable moments of conversion: moments of loving and brilliant transformation.

Yesterday, some of us were able to meet from around the world to “… walk hand in hand with Mary” using Zoom. And there were moments when I went from screen to screen, recognizing some faces and names, and others that were new to me. And my heart was filled with joy and gratitude for such a beautiful gift. Today I will find some time to revisit the video in order to solidify some of what I heard yesterday (to try and take it in so that it all becomes a part of me) and to hear what my ears seemed not to hear the first time around.

Shared love that allows us to readily rejoice in each other – on an emotional level but even more deeply on a spiritual heart level; in very much the same way as my coming to this place each day brings about small conversions of love.
