I DO NOT AT ALL WANT ANY SMOKING WICKS IN THE SOCIETY
“Zeal is a volcano, the peak of which the grass of indecisiveness does not grow.” Khalil Gibran
Missionary zeal was the hallmark of Eugene’s personality and whole life. On his deathbed his final wish for the Oblates was for them to have undying zeal for the salvation of souls.
I do not at all want any smoking wicks in the society, may they burn, may they burn, may they be rekindled, may they light the way or leave.
Eugene de Mazenod’s Diary, 19 July 1846, EO XXI
Eugene spared no effort to rekindle the “smoldering wicks” in his missionary family. His letters are full of encouragement to those who needed to be rekindled so that they would become bright missionary lights. In the case when it became clear that the wick could not be saved from smoldering, it was time for the person to move on away from the Congregation and find a new direction in life.

In Exodus 3:2 which speaks of Moses we read: “There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed.”
I also recall how Jesus spoke of the light when he said: “Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5) A smoldering wick does not give off any light. And the flame of a candle is not to highlight ourselves but for others to see it in the light that comes from God.
Our zeal and passion are not given to us to highlight ourselves, or to make us comfortable as we sit and wait for God to come and bring us home. There is nothing sedate about it. Nor was the light given to us to try and harness it and fit it into a particular mold. We may or may not be as volatile as Eugene was, still there is fire and flame within us and the source of the fire is always of God.
We are born to share our experience(s) of God with all whom we meet and enter into communion with… I have just finished reading the “Working Document for the Continental Stage: ‘Enlarge the space of your tent’” and a small fire within me has become rekindled. Perhaps so that the flame of that fire will light up the furthest and darkest corners, nooks and crannies of my heart.
My experience since getting to know Eugene de Mazenod and his many sons and daughters is to let his light, the light of God shine on all who I meet, and to allow them to share their God-given light with me. What kind of a light is shone on my neighbours’ feet as we walk together?
