“There are two great days in a person’s life – the day we are born and the day we discover why.” (William Barclay)

I seldom considered my own baptism until I met Eugene. For Eugene it was the beginning of his whole life with God, like the cornerstone…
I read down through Eugene’s litany and then very slowly, with deliberation read them from the bottom up, pausing, giving thanks and recognizing how Eugene has touched me…
Teacher of the unlearned, pray for us…
Witness to Christ’s love on the cross, pray for us… I pause here and decide I want to carry this with me for the day. I think of how the Oblate Family are living examples of these Mazenodian characteristics, living Mazenodian values…
I will commit myself to daily pondering and reflecting on each of these characteristics, followed by the short prayer of: “ Lord, through the intercession of Saint Eugene de Mazenod, make us missionaries, especially to the poor and abandoned. Give us the same love Saint Eugene had, so we may see the poor and abandoned through the eyes of Jesus our Saviour. Help us accompany them to the resurrection. We ask this through Christ the Lord. Amen.”
The morning sky is laden with heavy clouds, but there are breaks where the clouds are lighter and which along with the sky around them have shades of greys and pinks – the very air around them looking as if it is all a song in praise of life.
This too is how God, through Eugene leads us…
