WE MUST FOLLOW THE INDICATIONS OF GRACE AND NOT FORCE ANYTHING.

Eugene had desired that some Oblates be permitted to establish themselves to work in the Diocese of Quebec, but the Archbishop had not been open to the idea. Now there had been a change of heart and he had allowed the Oblates to establish themselves in Bytown (present-day Ottawa).

I rejoice keenly over the turn of events regarding the establishment at Bytown. Perseverance is necessary. It is not possible to have the entire success we desire as soon as we would wish. We must follow the indications of grace and not force anything.

You will readily understand what must have been my joy when you informed me that the diocese of Quebec was being opened to you. You know how much I desired this moment would come.

Divine Providence has heard our prayers and now you are being received under the best auspices. Who would have believed you would be called by the Archbishop himself and that he would welcome you so amiably as well as his coadjutor Bishop! It is so true that the good God disposes hearts according to his good pleasure for you will recall that they represented the Archbishop to you as formidable and difficult to make amenable to what he had not asked himself.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Oblate Associate says:

This morning’s post reminds me not only of our humble beginnings in Canada and around the world, the beginnings of the congregation, the Mazenodian/Oblate family, and of the Church herself.

While it was with Eugene de Mazenod that the Spirit shared and anointed this charism, it began 2000 years earlier with Jesus and his apostles, the very beginnings of our beloved Church. Mark (16:15) describes Jesus commissioning the disciples: “And he said to them: Go into all the world and proclaim the good news…” Jesus and his apostles, the very models that Eugene speaks of in The Preface, and who are the backdrop on the stage of our Constitutions and Rules, the living expression of our charism.

I am reminded how in 2016 we celebrated our 200th Anniversary as a congregation, as a family; and how many of us here in Canada sang “Go Tell Everyone”. A renewal and a resending-out as missionaries into the world. From the world that the apostles knew, to the new world that Eugene was writing about in his letter to Jean Honorat to the present world today: “Go tell everyone the news that the Kingdom of God has come…”

Last night I took part in a series of presentations offered with Sr. Maureen Sullivan, OP titled “Fertile Ground: The Synod, Vatican II and the Future of the Church”. From our humble beginnings in 1844, to the present where we are being asked to continue the movement begun with Jesus and the apostles, begun with the Church, begun with the Founder of our of our family. I think of the Mazenodian Family Congress that will take place around the world at the end of May. And of how we are all being asked to take part in the Synodal process; active parts not just for the clerics but for all who make up the family of God’s people.

And go tell everyone the news that the Kingdom of God has come… “You will readily understand what must have been my joy… You know how much I desired this moment would come.”
