YOU KNOW THAT A TRUE FRIEND CAN BE COMPARED TO A FAITHFUL MIRROR IN WHICH ONE CAN SEE ONESELF AS ONE IS

Continuing to read Eugene’s letter to Father Honorat, we see his good advice on learning from the experience of others.

Never complain about a person to someone else. When you have observations to make, make them to the person himself without fuss and cordially… You know that a true friend can be compared to a faithful mirror in which one can see oneself as one is; if it reflects some imperfection, were it only a loose strand of hair, one is not annoyed with the mirror; on the contrary, one is thankful and relieved at having perceived it. Alius sic alius vero sic. [ ed. 1 Corinthians 7:7 “each has a particular gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.”]

You have something lacking to others, you lack something that others have. Be pleased with your share; you are well enough endowed.

Bring to fruition only what the good God has given you, removing any remains of the rough exterior which at times repels and deters people from taking profit from it.

This is advice in plenty. It pleases me to think that you will profit from it and that you know your duty. For the rest, I can tell you that I am perfectly satisfied with your letter and the sentiments you express therein.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Oblate Associate says:

This letter that Eugene is writing to another has become deeply personal this morning as he gently points out areas of Fr. Honorat’s life which could profit from a change of attitude. And I am reminded of my first experience of Eugene’s words touching me deeply; they seared my heart and forever changed me. It is no different in a one sense. Truly a “A father’s communication with his many children…” It matters not that I have heard the message from others before now, but only that I have now heard it and am able to take it in and allow it to become a part of me, allow it to transform me in that way that only real love has the power to act.

I think of the term “the perfect storm” and how different elements of nature come together in such a way to create a great storm; one in which we can see the awesome power of that which God has created and to change nature in different ways.

I think of how God and friends have conspired against me to create that perfect storm within myself, not to destroy or harm me but to awaken something within me that I feared to see. It has brought together different elements of the gifts and vulnerabilities that God has bestowed upon me; to accept them and learn from them.

Dawn has arrived in my beloved city, and I see things differently compared to the darkness of just minutes ago. Nothing has changed except in how I see and recognize it in the light.

I find myself giving thanks to God – not just for the dawn, but for the love of friends who have helped me to emerge from a particular darkness. It matters not the length of time it has taken to be in the light, but rather that I am like the woman who had lost a coin and who rejoiced in finding it.
