PARISH MISSIONS: PREACHING TO BE PREPARED IN PRAYER

It was the Saviour who had to speak through his co-operator, as Eugene wrote in his Rule:

The missionary – lest his preaching be in vain – will pray and get others to pray to the Divine Master of hearts, to deign to accompany the words of his minister with that powerful grace, which moves and converts souls, and without which all words are but as sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal.

1826 Rule Part I, Chapter 3, §1, Art. 24.

Today with so many aids to preaching and catechising available, it is easy to forget the necessity of allowing ourselves to be the mouthpiece of Jesus Christ and to prepare our sermons “on our knees.”

  1. As I read this reflection, what came to mind is that how I have asked the Oblate family for prayer prior to a retreat or talk. This sense of being lifted up in prayer gives me both the support and encouragement I need and community that keeps me grounded. It also reminds me that “I can’t do it alone”. I need others in my poverty.
