WE WILL SPARE NO EFFORT TO RE-AWAKEN THE FAITH IN PEOPLE (C 7)

We will spare no effort to awaken or to reawaken the faith in the people to whom we are sent, and we will help them to discover “who Christ is”

Constitution 7

Eugene founded us to “reawaken the faith” of the people of France after the French Revolution. Christopher Dawson described that situation as “an atmosphere of defeat and disaster” and continued:

“Everything had to be rebuilt from the foundations. The religious orders and the monasteries, the Catholic universities and colleges and, not least, the foreign missions had all been destroyed or reduced to poverty and impotence. Worst of all, the Church was still associated with the unpopular cause of the political reaction and the tradition of the ancien régime.

Yet, in spite of all these disasters, the Church did recover and a revival of Catholicism took place, so that the church was in a far stronger position by 1850 than it had been 100 years before when it still possessed its ancient wealth and privileges.” (The Historic Reality of Christian Culture, p. 57 – https://archive.org/)

Eugene’s Missionaries played an important role in the recovery of the Church through the impact of the prolonged and intense parish missions in France and Corsica, and later in the missions outside of France where they encountered Catholics who had fallen away.

(The topic of the popular missions has been reflected on in depth in this series in the past. I invite you to consult some of these entries, from https://www.eugenedemazenod.net/?p=358 to https://www.eugenedemazenod.net/?p=2524 )

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

As I read Frank and Christopher Dawson’s accounts of “reawakenings” in the Church a new window to my soul opens I as I think of Eugene’s own reawakening and that of the Church. I recognize the many reawakenings that took place within and following Vatican II which in turn spawned small reawakenings within all of the members of the Church. Small conversions led by the Spirit to each one of us. She continues to lead within each of us as we are called to “enlarge the space of our tents” (ref. Is 54;2).

The violence in the world is similar to the French Revolution in that it calls us to look within ourselves, our lives, and the life of the Church.

Jesus himself “spared no effort” in showing us a way of helping ourselves and others to recognize who Jesus the Christ is. It is not about power and control of anyone or any thing: it is about offering ourselves according to how God has created us to be.

I think I have been very self-righteous at times which does not sit well with the idea sparing no effort so that others may discover “who Christ is”. I realise that it is the members of the Oblate Charismatic Family who daily have offered to help me accept the log that is in my heart’s eye and then help remove it for it is not something I can see let alone do on my own. There is a part of that “ancien regime” within me. Once the log is pulled out of my eye, then I can begin to help others who need help in pulling the sliver out of theirs.

My hope is that I will become a small light to my neighbours feet. I serve in this way and in the way that the Spirit whispers that I belong.

  2. Claude Berthaud says:

Thank vous Frank for our rewakening.

Merci, Claude. Your words are always an encouragement. Your ministry of teaching confirmation candidates “who Jesus Christ really is” is exactly what St Eugene taught us, his Missionary Charismatic Family, to do. His example, words and intercession contiune to accompany each of us wherever we are in the world.
