LET’S HAVE COURAGE THEN AND PUT OUR CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD

Father Vincens was the Novice Master, preparing future Oblate missionaries. In the previous entry we saw Eugene’s letter to him announcing the acceptance of our first mission in Asia, which concludes with:

Bishop Bettachini left with his heart full of joy; and unless the Propagation presents obstacles, which I hope will not happen, next month our first missionaries will leave with the Bishop to lay the first foundations of this great endeavor.

This departure will not prevent four missionaries from leaving for America, who will soon be followed by several others. You see that we need a lot of people to satisfy all these needs.

Let’s have courage then and put our confidence in the Lord. The important point will always be to form good men; neglect nothing to that purpose.

Letter to Father Ambroise Vincens, 12 August 1847, EO X n 936

REFLECTION

“I have but one candle of life to burn, and I would rather burn it out in a land filled with darkness than in a land flooded with light.” (John Keith Falconer)

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

I am struck by the fact that if we do not put our confidence in the Lord, and in the Holy Spirit – then we are left to rely on ourselves. I, like Eugene, speak of from that great truth. We cannot do it on my own.

I think about the past Synod on Synodality and how it brought people together, allowing them to discover for themselves how to walk with others, especially those who have nothing to offer us. This land of ours in North America is flooded with light so that we can see just how great we are and those who measure up and those who don’t… Yet in the very heart of the great light we try to shine upon ourselves there is a deep and seemingly impenetrable darkness that we cannot ignore or turn away from.

Last night at a zoom gathering I shared aloud about being able to trust in God and that I am filled with indescribable joy and gratitude… I am a lay woman who has struggled greatly and yet it has not beaten me but rather has allowed love and grace to flow within and out at the same time.

God sends us” asking for our puny “all”. Walking in the darkness allows me to see the small and dim light that my neighbour is sharing between us. Thank you Lord for this is more than enough.
