SUNDAY  V LENT: I adore Him as he sighs and weeps outside Lazarus’s tomb

And Jesus wept.
So the Jews said, “See how he loved him.” (John 35-36)

At the same time I certainly do not boast to being insensitive to the blows that seem at times about to crush us…

Jesus Christ is our only model and he did not set us an example of that kind. I adore Him as he sighs and weeps outside Lazarus’s tomb and I despise and abhor displays of stoicism, insensitivity and egoism from people who seem to want to outdo this prototype of every perfection, who so wanted to sanctify every aspect of our sad pilgrimage.

Letter to Henri Tempier, 11 January 1831, EO VII n 380

REFLECTION

Lord, when we are overwhelmed with grief and doubt your love and purpose, help us to know that you are with us and grieving alongside us. Give us enough faith to believe that You are good and that You care for us. Deepen our faith when we experience life in a ‘tomb’ so that when we enter a season of bright light we will not forget your grace. Amen.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

Each time I hear this Gospel there is a part of me that wonders why Jesus did not immediately leave what he was doing when he first heard Lazarus was dying? This was one of his dearest friends…

There are those times in our lives when we want to respond to another but because of previous committments, health concerns or just plain old life we must finish first what we are about before joining our friends or our loved ones…

It can be like that when we struggle and find our own selves entering into a dark and lonely place. We cry out to the Lord to come to our aid but we do not always feel like our cries have been heard let alone responded to.

Sometimes we need to go deeper within ourselves, seeming to go deeper into the darkness, alone. “Deepen our faith Lord as we experience life in a ‘tomb’ so that when we enter a season of bright light we might remember your grace.”

“Though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust
yet the love of the Lord will stand
As a shelter for all who will call on his name
Sing the praise and the glory of God “
