FRIDAY IV LENT: let me be surprised by the wonder of your love

When the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from. (John 7:27)

On his return to Aix as a new priest, Father Eugene was conscious of his mission to lead people to know who Jesus Christ was.

My chief occupation will be to love him, my chief concern to make him loved. To this I will bend all my efforts, time, strength, and when after much toil I have succeeded in winning but a single act of love towards so good a Master, I will rightly consider myself very well paid.

Eugene de Mazenod’s retreat notes, December 1812, EO XV n. 109

REFLECTION

Father ever ancient, ever new, give me the grace to see you with new eyes and to be surprised once again by the wonder of your love and work in my life.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

“To this end I will bend all my efforts, time, strength…” To whom or to what am I trying to bend all my efforts. Some mornings it is an effort to be faithful to my commitment to come here – so as to begin my day with God, in Jesus and through the Holy Spirit.

I cannot stress strongly enough that without my time with “so good a Master” I am unable to do all that is asked of me; my commitment to God who is greater than all of creation.

“Lord, walk today with me and the others who are learning to live with invisible limitations and weaknesses. It is only this way that we can look at the work of our lives. I have once again returned to beginning the day by asking:

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

Open the eyes of my will and my heart to the joy of being “surprised by the wonder of your love…”
