I AM GIVING YOU A VERITABLE GIFT, AND HAVE GREAT HOPE IN HIM FOR THE GOOD OF THE MISSION

“Good is never accomplished except at the cost of those who do it, truth never breaks through except through the sacrifice of those who spread it.” (St. John Henry Newman)

Eugene noted in his diary:

July 1st:  Fr. Cooke, an Irish priest of our congregation whom I ordained the other day, came to take his leave of me. He will be leaving to go to England. He is an excellent religious, a capable man who will do much good in the mission. He made a first endeavor in his apostolate among the English who work at St-Henri.  He made a good number of them return to the bosom of the Church.

Eugene de Mazenod’s Diary, 1 July 1846, EO XXI

Then in a letter to Mr Ambrose Phillipps, a patron of the Oblates in England, Eugene wrote:

Today, I am pleased, dear Sir, to give you new proof of the interest I take in your mission. I am putting two excellent religious of the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate on their way to Grâce-Dieu. One is French, the other is Irish. Both are of great worth. Without speaking of the former, I will tell you that Father Cooke is a man distinguished for his learning and piety. He has just tested his zeal here among a colony of English people who came to work for the railways. This good Father Cook[e] succeeded in winning over those people, and had several of them return to the Church’s bosom. You will be pleased with his modest and edifying bearing, his conversation, good judgment; in a word I am giving you a veritable gift, and have great hope in him for the good of the mission…

I will not close without thanking you for all the kindness that you always show to our Fathers.  They are grateful for it as I am on my part. God willing, I hope to be able to go and thank you personally by word of mouth in paying you a short visit next year at Grâce-Dieu.

Letter to M. Ambrose Lisle March Phillipps, Grâce-Dieu Manor, 2 July 1846, EO XIII n 107

One Response to I AM GIVING YOU A VERITABLE GIFT, AND HAVE GREAT HOPE IN HIM FOR THE GOOD OF THE MISSION

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Lay Oblate says:

There is a truth to what Newman said. We don’t always see it in our lives, but it happens when we do/give/make goodness out of love, letting go of our own wants and preferences and putting God and the other first. It is our hearts which both betray and lead us in love.

My experiences have taught me that in going deeper with Eugene, our Founder leads us outward towards the ‘Newmans’ and others in this world, past and present. Rather than focusing only on ourselves and our family we begin to focus outward, meeting and seeing God in so many others. Just as the Founder introduced Fr. Cooke to his friend Mr. Phillipps, so he and his sons and daughters introduce us to others making veritable gifts of them and us to each other, with hope for the good of the mission. “Our call… to live Christ Jesus in apostolic community. To live Christ Jesus crucified among the most abandoned in the Church. Proclaiming the Word with daring humility and trust, as prophets of the new world with Mary Immaculate.” (C 1-10)

Once we learn to see through the eyes of the crucified Saviour – He who sacrificed himself out of love for the Father and for all of life we too are capable of making great sacrifices.

The image of the flaming hearts of Jesus and his disciples comes to mind: that love and life shared between them and then moving outward to all takes on a deeper and more beautiful sense. It is real, it is lived and it is a part of all of us who are called…

I believe that here we are invited to go deeper and out past our own families, religions and spiritualities. In coming to know ourselves we are then led to know and embrace all others. The small steps we make here will lead us on the path of those we meet in the present moments of our day. Let us celebrate these beautiful gifts with each other.
