In just over one hundred words Eugene managed to convey his love for young Father Aubert and his gratitude for Aubert’s enthusiastic response in being sent to serve an ever-growing need in Canada. Eugene hoped that all those being sent to the new world shared the same sentiments as Aubert.
Again, this morning I am touched by a man who has given his all to God and still finds time to respond to a young man who is not yet ordained. Eugene will forgo the joy of being able to ordain Aubert himself, something that he would have liked to be able to take part in.
I remember the day when we were gathered in the chapel of Queen of Apostles Retreat House, there were five of us making our first commitment as Oblate Associates of OMI Lacombe Province. The joy I experienced at being able to do that surrounded by those that I love. And when I look at the video and the pictures of those gathered around us they too expressed joy and love with us.
Eugene could have been speaking to all of us – then and now we all receive the same mission for it is God’s mission that we all take part in. Was Eugene there with us in spirit? I am sure he was – celebrating with us and holding our responses in his heart. As it says at the top right corner of the page “A father’s communication with his many children… that is one of the most agreeable occupations of my life” 1857
