I signed up for the “Oblation Expressed in Missionary Discipleship” course, I think before even the content was finalized. In part because I wanted to do it, but also because I hoped that my response to this final course would somehow be similar to my experience of the other two listed above: my experience of them was transformative – particularly the latter of the two for they shed light on a way of living that resonated within me. I was led into the depths of discovering my beloved Church, how she/we are sacrament; a Rule of life that expresses how we are called to live it with each other in such a way that it fits perfectly with how we are created. Like the vibrations caused by air within certain musical instruments, the Constitutions vibrate within me, causing a hum, a hymn to be given tones and words; beautiful expressions that rise up from within giving a melody to life.
Fanciful? Perhaps. But it is a part of my experience with these courses as we become who God creates us to be.
I have a spiritual director who reminds me that contemplation will not interfere with my regular prayer life, but it may well enhance it in such a way that I am forever changed. So it is with the charism of Eugene de Mazenod and its expression found in the Constitutions and Rules.
The next step? How my personal oblation is expressed in Missionary Discipleship; we are all called as disciples and we discover who we are, what our gifts are in and with each other. The discovery has begun and I look forward to sharing the journey with others who have walked this path before us, and those who journey with us now.
