The population had a special devotion to the small sanctuary of Notre Dame de la Garde on the hill dominating the city. The statue of the \u201cGood Mother\u201d which represented Mary\u2019s \u201ckeeping guard\u201d over the city and over the sea, was particularly loved by the people. Eugene wrote:<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><strong>We are going to offer solemn prayers. Tomorrow we are bringing down the statue of Notre Dame de la Garde for exposition in the cathedral for three days. Afterwards we will have a procession of the Blessed Sacrament for all who wish to take part\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Letter to Casimir Aubert, 10 March 1835, EO VIII n 508<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5185\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eugenedemazenod.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/August-23.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eugenedemazenod.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/August-23.jpg 575w, https:\/\/www.eugenedemazenod.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/August-23-185x300.jpg 185w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Writing to his mother some days later he describes this event:<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><strong>We are now confronted by a quite ravishing spectacle. It is a holy explosion of devotion to the Blessed Virgin, which was displayed not only in the course of the journey down from the Mount to the cathedral, but is still going on with a sustained trust. \u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Letter to his mother, March 1835, EO XV\u00a0 n. 176<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Two years later there was another outbreak of the epidemic:<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><strong>On the feast of the Assumption, I officiated pontifically at the cathedral both in the morning and in the evening. I took part in the general procession and gave Benediction in the evening.
