Eugene finally arrived in Rome on November 26. It was his first visit to Rome and he was filled with a sense of awe at being there. In each letter that he wrote and in the Diary that he kept each day, he describes his many visits and experiences in this city which he calls \u201cthe capital of Christendom.\u201d To Hippolyte Court\u00e8s he wrote:<\/p>\n
\nDown with avarice, my dear Court\u00e8s, although the postal fee on my letter must ruin you, I am not resisting the desire to write to you and to date my epistle from the capital of the Christian world. This title is due to this beautiful city of Rome, not only because she is the seat of the Vicar of Jesus Christ, visible head of the Church, but also because she is, as it were, a Compendium of Christianity.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n
