Bill Woestmann gives us a good background to understand the strong language of Eugene and the urgency of having good priests in a Church that was in crisis. He writes:<\/span><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cFor a real understanding of de Mazenod\u2019s intention, the religious situation of France at that moment must be kept in mind.<\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 60px;\">\n<li>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All religious communities of men and women in France had been suppressed during the Revolution (1789-1799), <\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">their houses and churches were destroyed or used for secular purposes, <\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the secular clergy was persecuted &#8211; murdered, imprisoned, driven into exile and hiding \u2013 <\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h6><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and all seminaries were closed for many years. <\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6 style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The effects of this continued to be felt long after the end of overt persecution.<\/p>\n<p>Thus the number of active priests between 1809 and 1815 dropped from 31,870 to 25,874.\u201d <\/span><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">(\u201cPriest\u201d in <em>DICTIONARY OF OBLATE VALUES)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> This is the context in which the Oblates were founded, and it explains something of the urgency that Eugene felt when he wanted to alleviate the suffering of the Church<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fr.
