SAINT EUGENE, FOUNDER OF A RELIGIOUS CONGREGATION – IN HIS OWN WORDS

1818, November 1. The missionary community becomes a congregation of religious priests and brothers who make vows to live the evangelical counsels.

It is necessary that we understand, now more than ever before, the necessity of being perfect religious in order to be good missionaries. We need to be persuaded that the most efficient means of ensuring abundant harvest in souls is the holiness of our lives and the faithful practice of all the duties of our state.

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Oblate Associate says:

Eugene speaks to us – alive in our midst today; his spirit lives on, is shared with us so that we can share this with all who we meet.

It matters not of our state of life, whether we share a physical house with our brothers and sisters or if we are off in some distant mission; whether we are alone with only our hearts to give witness to the greater family that we belong to.

I look around my room which is much of my world since the pandemic settled down to live in our midst and my eyes look at items that are precious to me, how they serve as reminders of that which is most important to maintain in my life; my crucifix, a copy of our Rule of Life, a reflection that carries me… Agents of renewal. These are some of the ways that Spirit chooses to whisper her words to me these days. And yes my computer to communicate, to share, to learn…

Renewal – another day of listening to her call; just like the one Eugene gave shared in his opening address of the General Chapter in 1850.

    Life-giving and thought-provoking…

It is a new day and this is our mana, our daily bread…
