JESUS, LIVING IN MARY, COME AND LIVE IN ME

The Sulpicians were vigilant to see that every priest whom they trained could say: “I live now not with my own life but with the life of Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). Mary was given to them as a model of this attitude since Christ lived in her in the fullest sense of the word.

Casimir Lubowicki, “Mary” in the Dictionary of Oblate Values, https://www.omiworld.org/lemma/mary/

Eugene wanted this prayer to be prayed each day by the Oblates, and it has become a part of our spiritual tradition:

O Jesus, living in Mary,
come and live in your servants,
in the spirit of your holiness,
in the fullness of your power,
in the perfection of your ways,
in the truth of your virtues,
in the communion of your mysteries.
Overcome every hostile power in your Spirit,
for the glory of the Father. Amen

1 Response to JESUS, LIVING IN MARY, COME AND LIVE IN ME

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Oblate Associate says:

Each morning I come here, and each morning I read and reflect and find something special, something that I might not have noticed in a way before – a least not consciously or deeply. Perhaps it was that I was simply reading the words before now, and this morning I pause, taste them and allow them to sit within me. I allow myself to taste and savour them, then chew them with reverence and awe, swallowing them so they become a part of me – more than just mere words that I have ‘heard’ somewhere before. And even as I write these words I recognize this new (for me) truth.

“I live now not with my own life but with the life of Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). I know this piece from Paul. Each time I have read it I have loved it – and yet I was too afraid to stop and really look at that – would that be possible for me? Dare I hope? What would that look like? And suddenly I feel I little bit like Peter when he was faced by the Lord who wished to wash his feet. He struggled with that small piece of intimacy and yet when it was explained he gave in and cried ‘then wash all of me’.
Is this what it was like for Eugene? ‘Mary was then given to them as a model of this attitude…’ And as I sit here typing the words seem to come directly from my heart; I find myself in tears with a momentary and small point of recognition of truth. tiny bursts of light break forth from the gift of this morning’s gift.

I feel as if I have surrendered something, let go of something that I had been holding on to – for my very life; out of fear and in my brokenness. My heart has once again has let go, has emptied itself simply in order that it might be filled.

It is with joy and eagerness that I shout ‘then wash all of me Lord’. It is with trust, hope and gratitude that I join with my brothers and sisters and pray:

    O Jesus, living in Mary,
come and live in your servants,
in the spirit of your holiness,
in the fullness of your power,
in the perfection of your ways,
in the truth of your virtues,
in the communion of your mysteries.
Overcome every hostile power in your Spirit,
for the glory of the Father. Amen
