IN TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS LET US ACCEPT EVERYTHING FROM GOD’S HANDS

… Father Grassi has written to me again and to the same effect. (Ed: Allusion to Father Grassi of Turin with whom the Founder was corresponding with a view to a foundation in Sardinia )
Let us compose ourselves in patience and a spirit of resignation to wait on the Lord. But we must never give up praying earnestly to be worthy of carrying out his holy will. God in his goodness wishes us to tread the path of trials and tribulations: let us accept everything from his hands.
We need to be fully rooted in these great principles, for at this very moment a great misfortune threatens us.

Letter to Jean Baptiste Mille, 10 January 1831, EO VIII n 379

One Response to IN TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS LET US ACCEPT EVERYTHING FROM GOD’S HANDS

  1. Eleanor Rabnett, Oblate Associate says:

I read this small piece from Eugene’s letter to Fr. Mille and think briefly of Jesus as he moved forward on his road to Jerusalem. He did not blind himself to what was ahead, nor did he turn away or stop his loving, teaching and leading others. And his apostles were no different later on. I think for a moment of what is ahead of Eugene in his life and how he will have to be. I think of what Fr. Louis Lougen said to us at the last convocation as we all looked at challenges and changes ahead of us in our Province. I remember him leaning forward and tell us that we were right where we were supposed to be. And this reminds me of Eugene’s experience before Our Lady in the chapel, his experience of hearing that and staying where he was supposed to be at that time.

Sometimes when I look forward I want to turn away – out of fear of being challenged or becoming uncomfortable. The desire to keep up the momentum of moving forward might be really strong and I don’t want anyone or anything ‘to mess with that’. And yet don’t I myself tell those I love and walk with to ‘hang in there’, to stay where God allows them to be? Here is Eugene telling us/me to put on patience and acceptance of where I am, for God wishes me to be right where I am so that I can accept everything He offers me.
